Sincona sale 47, lot 1650

This specimen was lot 1650 in Sincona sale 47 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 1,100 CHF (about US$1,320 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, Konigreich, Louis XIV. 1643-1715. 1/4 Ecu 1646, Marseilles. Selten. Gutes sehr schön. Flaue Stellen. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, quarter écu of 1646, Marseilles mint. Rare, Good very fine, Some weakly struck areas.)"

This is a quart d'écu struck by the hammer at Marseilles at the beginning of the reign of Louis XIV. Milled quart d'écu à la meche longue (6.86 g, 0.917 fine) were also struck in 1646 at Paris (A) and four other mints. Under Henry III, it had a face value of fifteen sols tournois, by 1645, its value had risen to 21 sols tournois.

Recorded mintage: 58,514, common for type.
