This specimen was lot 56165 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/4 Ecu, 1645-(9). Rennes Mint. Louis XIV. NGC AU-58. SCARCE mint." This is among the last hammered coins struck in France. After production of the franc d'argent was suspended in 1586, this was the largest silver coin regularly struck prior to the introduction of milled coinage in the 1640's. Under Henry III, it had a face value of fifteen sols tournois, by 1645, its value had risen to 21 sols tournois. It was struck at Rennes 1643-48. Note the king's name on the shield side; other mints placed his name on the cross side.

Recorded mintage: 374,933, the most common date.

Specification: 9.71 g, 0.917 fine silver, 26-31 mm diameter.
