Stack's Bowers September 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74701

This specimen was lot 74701 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/4 Ecu, 1648-A. Paris Mint. Louis XIV. PCGS AU-55. Variety with heart. From the Richard August Collection." This type was struck 1646-60 at numerous mints but never in the numbers of the 1/12 écu, half écu or écu. Hammered quart d'écu au marteau were still being struck in 1648 at Limoges, Bayonne (Dr/4 № 428), Amiens (Dr/4 № 429) and Morlaàs (Dr/4 № 433).

Recorded mintage: 235,381, a common date[2].

Specification: 6.86 g, 0.917 fine silver, 27 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin.
