This specimen was lot 1612 in Jean Elsen sale 147 (Brussels, June 2021), where it sold for €1,000 (about US$1,218 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, <blockquote>"''FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XVI (1774-1793), AV double louis d'or à la tête nue, 1792A, Paris. D/ T. nue à g., les cheveux longs. R/ Ecus accolés de France et de Navarre sous une couronne. Rare Petit défaut de flan sur la joue. Très Beau.'' (kingdom of [[France]], Louis XVI, 1774-93, gold double louis of the bare head of 1792, Paris mint. Obverse: bare head to left, with long hair; reverse: accolated arms of France and Navarre under a crown. Rare, minor planchet flaw, Very Fine.)"</blockquote> This is a scarce ''double louis d'or à la tête nue'' from the Paris mint. 1786 is the peak year of issue for this type, with the Paris mint leading eleven mints with 2,641,702 examples. The years 1786-87 are common as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer.

An exceptional specimen striking, this bronzed pattern displays rich brown surfaces, immense brilliance, and elegant crispness throughout. As such, a VERY RARE and enchanting offering. Already an EXTREMELY RARE offering in silver, Margolis notes his astonishment with the present example, in that "...it was a considerable surprise when this example was acquired to realize that it had been struck from the "normal" obverse and reverse dies, unlike the two examples with lettered edges previously seen, which were struck from the "special" dies." From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Patrick Guillard on 6 January 2001)."</blockquote> The SCWC states that all known examples are restrikes from the 1850's or later.
