Jean Elsen sale 114, lot 1169
France 1695E ecu rev JElsen 114-1169.jpg

This specimen was lot 1169 in Jean Elsen sale 114 (Brussels, September 2012) where it sold for €250 (about US$386 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANCE ROYALE, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR écu aux palmes, 1695 E, Tours. 2e réformation. Droit: B. à droite, cuirassé à l'antique. Revers: Ecu de France rond, couronné, entre deux palmes. Très Beau. (France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver écu of the palms of 1695, Tours mint, second reform. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: crowned round shield of France, surrounded by two palm branches. Very fine.)"

This type was struck 1693-1701 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"--see the specimen shown for the visible undertype). It was succeeded by the écu aux insignes. Droulers[1] prices this date about 60% more than the common date, but even a common date is priced 20% higher than an écu à la mèche longue.

Reported Mintage: unknown but noted as "R2" in Gadoury with all known specimens struck on reformed blanks.

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 38-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, this specimen 27,31 g.

Catalog reference: Dupl., 1520A; Ci., 1894; Gad-217, Dr/4 № 510, Dr/2 № 410, Dav-3813, KM 298.
