The first specimen was lot 31235 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $646.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Ferdinand VII gold Escudo 1811 So-FJ, VG10 NGC. Toned surfaces with evenly worn features. The reverse is quite bold. Very scarce type and date; KM lists a mintage of 680 for this date. Ex: 'Colonel' E.H.R. Green; Green Estate' Partnership of Eric P Newman/B.G. Johnson." This specimen is one of a series struck 1808-17 in Santiago, Chile, during the reign of Ferdinand VII. The opening of an enlarged Casa de Moneda in 1805 allowed the increase in mintages but this type is scarce tho not so expensive as the two or four escudos. The imaginary bust of Ferdinand VII appears on the two reales, eight reales and eight escudos. The Spanish were expelled in 1817 but the first republican escudos did not appear until 1834. Some colonial types were restruck by the republicans during the early 1820's; it is not known if this denomination was included.
Recorded mintage: 680.
Specification: 3.38 g, 0.875 fine gold, .095 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: Cayón-16134, KM 76.
