Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 51389
SB124-51389 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 51389 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 1/4 Real, 1806-So. Santiago Mint. Charles IV. NGC VF-25. Exceptionally gratifying quality with instances of colorful tone in the fields. From the EMO Collection." The Santiago mint experimented with several designs for the quarter real 1790-93 before settling on the familiar lion and castle type in 1796. It is one of a series minted 1792-1808 for Charles IV and 1810-17 for Ferdinand VII. A hoard of uncirculated 1817's has been dispersed but the other dates are tough to find.

Recorded mintage: 54,000, including an 1806/5 overdate.

Specification: 0.84 g, 0.896 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-13199, EMO-870.2 (Plate coin); KM-63; Cal-202.
