Sincona sale 93, lot 1088

This specimen was lot 1088 in Sincona sale 93 (Zurich, October 2024), where it sold for 275 CHF (about US$381 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RUSSLAND Kaiserreich und Föderation, Catherine II. 1762-1796, Kopeck 1764, St. Petersburg Mint, SP(M). Selten. Fast sehr schön, Rare, About Very Fine."

This type was struck 1764-67 and is quite scarce. It is more available as a novodel than an original strike. Russia has the distinction of being the first country to issue decimal currency, as 100 kopeks = one ruble.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 10.24 g, copper, this specimen 7.70 g.

Catalog reference: KM C57.5, Bitkin 592 (R2).
