Maar na het Rampjaar 1672, toen de Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden van verschillende kanten te maken kreeg met binnentrekkende vijandige legers, werd een jaar lang uitgeweken naar de Munt in Amsterdam, tot dan toe Regulierstoren, en het bijbehorende wachthuis. Doordat de Amsterdamse Munt niet over een schroefpers beschikte, werden alle munten geslagen 'met de hamer '. De piedfort Dukaten op meervoudig gewicht, alsook sommige typen Zilveren rijders, zijn echter niet met de hand geslagen, maar met een schroefpers vervaardigd. Bovendien hebben ze een tekst op de muntrand en is uit onderzoek aan exemplaren in openbare collecties gebleken dat de metaalgehaltes afwijken van de voorgeschreven gehaltes. Aanwijzingen die tot de conclusie leiden dat deze bijzondere en zeldzame exemplaren buiten de Munt zijn vervaardigd. Christoffel Adolphi, een vooraanstaand goudsmid-medailleur heeft naar alle waarschijnlijkheid in de late zomer van 1672 gesolliciteerd naar een positie als stempelsnijder bij de nog op te richten Amsterdamse Munt door een fraai verzorgde meesterproef te vervaardigen van een Dukaton, die alle kenmerken had van een Amsterdamse munt. Aangenomen was hij er niet: door de bezetting van delen van het land werden er in Amsterdam nogal wat mensen aan het werk gezet uit andere, noodgedwongen gesloten munthuizen. Wel is bekend dat Adolphi meerdere ponsoenen heeft geleverd voor de Amsterdamse Dukatons en dat hij waarschijnlijk de maker van deze herinneringsdukatons is.
Ever since the Middle Ages, all coins for the province of Holland were struck in the mint in Dordrecht. But in the Disaster Year 1672, when the Republic of the Seven The United Netherlands was confronted with incoming enemy armies from various sides, the mint was forced to flee northwards to Amsterdam. The Regulierstoren and the associated guardhouse were transformed into a mint. During its operation between November 9, 1672 and November 7, 1673, two types of coins were minted: the Golden Ducat and the Silver Rider or Dukaton. Because the Amsterdam Mint did not have a screw press, all coins were hammered. The Piedfort Ducats on multiple-Ducat weight, as well as some types of Silver riders, are however not struck by hand, but manufactured with a screw press. In addition, they have an edge-inscription and research into specimens in public collections has shown that the metal contents deviate from the prescribed levels for the official coinage. Indications that lead to the conclusion that these special and rare specimens were manufactured outside the Mint. Christoffel Adolphi, a leading goldsmith and medalist, most likely applied for the position of die-engraver at the yet-to-be-established Amsterdam Mint in the late summer of 1672 through a masterfully crafted specimen Dukaton, which had all the characteristics of a coin from Amsterdam. Unfortunately, he was not hired: workmen from the occupied parts of the republic were put to work there instead. It is however known that Adolphi did supply some of the punches to the mint and is the likely origin for these commemorative ducatons with edge-inscriptions. 36.90 g. RRR.
