Gelderland 1596 ducat Fr-237
This specimen was lot 460 in Schulman auction 379 (Amsterdam, June 2024), where it sold for €360 (about US$463 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "GELDERLAND Provincie 1581 - 1795. Dukaat, 1596, Gold Type I. Staande ridder, met Spaanse helm, met zwaard en vier pijlen in bundel tussen jaartal en met binnencirkel .CONCORDIA. RES - .P - AR. CRES. GEL . Kz. versierd vierkant met 5-regelige tekst. Zeer fraai +. (province of Gelderland, ducat of 1596, type I. Obverse: standing knight with Spanish helmet, sword and bundle of arrows divides the date; reverse: five line inscription in tablet. Choice very fine.)" Gelderland, along with several other Dutch provinces, issued gold ducats from the sixteenth century until the termination of the United Provinces by Napoleon in the 1790's.
