Batenburg (1556-73) daalder Dav-8563
This specimen was lot 475 in Schulman auction 379 (Amsterdam, June 2024), where it sold for €550 (about US$707 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"GELDERLAND Heerlijkheden en steden. Daalder met de klimmende leeuw, z.j, Silver, WILLEM V van Bronckhorst 1556-1573, BATENBURG Klimmende leeuw een haak DA ✶ PACEM ✶ DOMINE ✶ IN ✶ DIEBVS. ✶ NOSTRIS. Kz. gekroonde dubbele adelaar met borstschild. MONETA ✶ NOVA ✶ ARGENTEA ✶ BATENBORGEN'. R. Zeer fraai +. (duchy of Gelderland, undated lion daalder, William V of Bronckhorst, 1556-73. Obverse: lion rampant; reverse: crowned double headed eagle with shield on its breast. Rare, very fine or better.)"
The lords of Bronkhorst were barons of Batenburg in Gelderland and from there began issuing daalders in the 1550's. Two dozen types are noted in Davenport (not including minors) before minting ceased about 1579.
