Jean Elsen sale 138, lot 1155

This specimen was lot 1155 in Jean Elsen sale 138 (Brussels, September 2018), where it sold for €950 (about US$1,310 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, BATENBURG, Willem van Bronckhorst (1556-1573), AR Sint Victordaalder, z.j. Vz/ SANCTVS VICTO-R- M-ARTIR Staande heilige met nimbus en vaandel. Kz/ MONETA NOVA ARGENTEA BATENBORGEN' Gekroonde rijksarend. Zeer zeldzaam Defekt aan de rand. Fraai à Zeer Fraai. (county of Batenburg, William of Bronckhorst, 1556-73, undated silver St. Victor's daalder. Obverse: armored saint with nimbus and banner; reverse: crowned imperial eagle. Very scarce, edge defect, Very fine.)"

The lords of Bronkhorst were barons of Batenburg in Gelderland and from there began issuing daalders, usually bad, in the 1550's. Two dozen types are noted in Davenport (not including minors) before minting ceased about 1579.
