Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74638
SB1122-74638r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74638 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. 12 Mariengroschen, 1700. Zellerfeld Mint; mm: three stars. Georg Ludwig (future George I of Great Britain). PCGS MS-62. Emanating from the first year of issue, this elegant specimen presents a deep gray tone with a particularly engaging dark cobalt nature among the legends and with some alluring brilliance remaining as well. Furthering its appeal that much more is a strong countenance presents upon the face of the wildman. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Includes ticket from Kuenker, with Lot # 2138." This type, equal to one-third thaler, was struck 1700-11. This date obtains a slight premium. George Ludwig was promoted to king of England on the death of his cousin Anne Stuart in 1714. This is the period when the electorate ceased to be known as Brunswick-Luneburg and called Hannover instead.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-34; Welter-2172.
