Künker sale 352, lot 1847

This specimen was lot 1847 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabruck, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €3,900 (about US$5,428 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Wilhelm I. 1861-1888. 1/2 Vereinskrone 1867, A. GOLD. Seltener Jahrgang. Prachtexemplar. Fast Stempelglanz. Erworben 1954 bei der Firma Grabow, Berlin. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, William I, 1861-88, half union crown of 1867. Rare date, choice example, about uncirculated. Bought from Grabow in 1954.)"

In 1855, the friedrichs d'or was dropped in favor of the gold krone. The krone was also minted by Austria, Saxony (KM 1197), Hannover (KM 232), Bavaria (Fr-280) and Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel (Fr-750) but does not seem to have been a success, as survivors are few. The krone was dropped in favor of the gold twenty mark after unification in 1871. This half krone was struck 1862-69.

Recorded mintage: 5,711.

Specification: 5.56 g, .900 fine gold, this specimen 5.53 g.

Catalog reference: KM 493, Divo/S. 174; Fr-2440; Schl. 651; Olding 435.
