Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 1153

This specimen was lot 1153 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €130 (about US$185 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR douzième d'écu aux huit L, 1704A, Paris. 2e type. 4e réformation. D/ B. à d., cuirassé à l'antique. R/ Croix formée de huit L couronnés, cantonnés de quatre lis, avec écu de France rond au centre. Rare. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver twelfth écu of the eight "L's" of 1704, Paris mint, second type, fourth reformation. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: cross formed of eight crowned "L's", cantonned with four lilies, with the round arms of France at the center. Rare, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck 1704-05 along with similar quarter, half and one écu aux huit L. This denomination had lost its earlier popularity and this is the only common date. Some mints (B, D, M, W, X) struck this type using obverse dies from previous types, which are very similar.

Recorded mintage: 1,646,734, all rf.

Specification: 2.28 g, .917 fine silver, 27-28 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Joseph Roëttiers, this specimen 2,09 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 750, Dr/2 no. 445, Dupl-1554A; Gad-124.
