France AN14-U 5 francs
This specimen was lot 1398 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 1,100 CHF (about US$1,362 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANKREICH I. Kaiserreich. Napoleon I. 1804-1815. 5 Francs An 14 (1805-06), Turin. Selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (empire of France, Napoleon I, 1804-15, five francs of year 14, Turin mint. Rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"
Shown is a Napoleonic five francs struck at the Turin mint (mint mark "U") in 1804-05. It is a somewhat common type struck two years only. The various designs of Napoleonic five francs form eight distinct types of which this is the third, struck 1804-06 (AN 13-14) with a complete set of this type comprising 27 date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. This date is quite scarce for the type. It was officially withdrawn from circulation in 1928 and demonetized in 2005 but ceased to circulate in France after World War One.

Specification: 37 mm diameter, 25 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Nicholas Brenet, 1770-1846, and Jean-Pierre Droz, 1746-1823, this specimen 24.91 g.
