This specimen was lot 3090 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "UKRAINE: Republic, AR 10 hryven, 1999, Princes of Ukraine Series - Askold, struck at the Ukrainian mint, Kyiv, Proof. According to the Primary Chronicle, the primary source of Kievan Rus, Askold was a prince of Kiev and founder of the first Viking state in the Dnieper. The Primary Chronicle states that Askold and Dir were sent by Rurik to Constantinople. While traveling on the Dnieper, they saw a settlement on a mountain." This denomination was used for numerous commemoratives in 1999, including KM 77, KM 85, KM 86 (shown here), KM 87, KM 88, KM 89, KM 90, KM 116, KM 117 and KM 118, all struck to the same module. The hryvnia was introduced in 1996 to supersede the karbovanets (1 hryvnia = 100,000 karbovanetsiv). Its sign is "₴". At present (June 2026), US$1 = 45.07 hryven.

Recorded mintage: 10,000, from the Kyiv mint.

Specifications: 33.63 g, 0.925 fine silver, 38.61 mm diameter, reeded edge.
