Sincona sale 95, lot 4697

The first specimen was lot 3261 in Sincona sale 94 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 425 CHF (about US$589 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Zürich, Stadt und Kanton, Taler 1756, Zürich. Variante mit rückseitigem Spruch und Jahreszahl in fünf Zeilen. Vorzüglich. Etwas flaue Prägung. (Switzerland, canton of Zürich, thaler of 1756, motto reverse. Extremely Fine, Slightly weakly struck.)"

The second specimen was lot 4697 in Sincona sale 95 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$416 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Zürich, Stadt und Kanton, Taler 1756/53, Zürich. Spruch. Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1753 geändert. Gutes sehr schön. (Switzerland, canton of Zürich, thaler of 1756, Zürich mint, 1756/3 overdate, motto reverse. Good Very Fine.)"

This type was struck in Zürich 1736-68 and was one of a series of thalers struck throughout the eighteenth century. Many of the later issues were "city view" thalers. The obverse legend, "MONETA REIPUBLICAE TIGURINAE," means "coin of the Republic of Zürich."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, the first specimen 27.80 g, the second specimen 27.99 g.
