Zurich 1743 thaler Dav-1789
This specimen was lot 4681 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$435 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Zürich, Stadt und Kanton, Taler 1743/1, Zürich. Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1741 geändert. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Gutes vorzüglich. Kleine Randunregelmässigkeit. (Switzerland, city and canton of Zürich, thaler of 1743, Zürich mint, 1743/1 overdate. Rare in this condition, About Uncirculated, Minor rim irregularity.)"
This type was struck in Zurich 1736-68 and was one of a series of thalers struck throughout the eighteenth century. Many of the later issues were "city view" thalers. The obverse legend, "MONETA REIPUBLICAE TIGURINAE," means "coin of the Republic of Zurich." In 1798, the canton of Zürich was forcibly incorporated into the Helvetic Republic.
