Sincona sale 98, lot 4682

This specimen was lot 4682 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 1,500 CHF (about US$2,176 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Zürich, Stadt und Kanton, Halbtaler 1743, Zürich. Stadtansicht. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich-FDC. (Switzerland, city and canton of Zürich, half thaler of 1743, Zürich mint, city view. Rare in this condition, About Uncirculated.)"

This type was struck 1720-26, 1729, 1732-36, 1739-45, 1748, 1751-53, 1756-61 and 1767-68. Half thalers with a motto reverse (KM 145) were struck 1723-36, 1739-45, 1748, 1751-61, 1767-68, so most years have both types. They are about equally common but the city view obtains a premium for the more interesting design.
