Zurich 1622 thaler Dav-4638
This specimen was lot 3585 in Sincona sale 20 (Zürich, October 2014), where it sold for CHF 400 (about US$501 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Taler 1622. Interessanter Schrötling: Dieser weist an drei Stellen (2 x auf der Vs, 1 x auf der Rs.) eindeutige Merkmale einer Überarbeitung auf. Die Rondelle hat nach dem Auswalzen an den drei Positionen fehlerhafte Stellen aufgewiesen, welche dann mit etwas Silber aufgefüllt wurden; wohl auch deshalb, damit das Gewicht zu stimmen kam. Nach der anschliessenden Prägung blieben diese aufgefüllten Stellen immer noch sichtbar. Äusserst interessantes Studienobjekt. Gutes sehr schön. (Interesting flan: this specimen has three spots (two on the obverse, one on the reverse) with unique features. The roundel had three flaws after rolling which were then filled with a plug of silver; no doubt to bring the weight up to standard. After the subsequent strike these plugs were still visible. Extremely interesting subject of study. Good very fine.)"
This type is listed for 1622, 1624 and 1645 and is of average scarcity. It is the first thaler issued in Zurich in the seventeenth century.
