Zeeland 1791 ducaton Dav-1836
This specimen was lot 23464 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Zeeland. Ducaton, 1791. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, Unc Details Secure Holder. Nicely struck with patchy gray to dark gray toning. Details grade due to spots of thin black encrustation on both sides, though difficult to tell apart from merely dark toning." The specimen is one of a type issued for the province of Zeeland 1716-93. Each province of the Netherlands issued its own coins; besides Zeeland, there are coins for Deventer, Friesland, Gelderland, Groningen, Holland, Overijssel, West Friesland and Utrecht, not counting various local issues. The Netherlands were swallowed up in Napoleon's empire and after his fall, reconstituted as a kingdom.
