Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74178

This specimen was lot 74178 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $750. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Zeeland. Ducaton (Silver Rider), 1793. Utrecht Mint. NGC MS-63. A Choice and quite handsomely lustrous specimen, this wholesome example delivers a sharp strike and much pleasing details." The specimen is one of a type issued for the province of Zeeland 1701-95. Each province of the Netherlands issued its own coins; besides Zeeland, there are coins for Deventer, Friesland, Gelderland, Groningen, Holland, Overyssel, West Friesland and Utrecht, not counting various local issues. The Netherlands were swallowed up in Napoleon's empire and after his fall, reconstituted as a kingdom.
