Zeeland 1788 1/4 silver ducat
The first specimen was lot 73307 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Zeeland. 1/4 Ducat, 1788/7. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. Struck on a somewhat irregular flan, this attractively toned, near choice example offers an even strike and some pleasing underlying luster. The overdate in the final digit is rather clear and well observed." The second specimen was lot 23425 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[2] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Zeeland. 1/4 Daalder, 1788/7. Zeeland Mint. NGC AU-58. A sharply struck example of the type with near-perfect detail and pleasing dark gray toning throughout. The overdate is quite dramatic." Zeeland seems to be the only province which struck this denomination, worth twelve stuivers, in quantity. It is known for 1762-93 along with gold specimens struck for presentation.
