Stack's Bowers 2021 ANA sale, lot 44449

This specimen was lot 44449 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $900. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY. Wurzburg. Taler, 1726. Christoph Franz von Hutten. PCGS EF-45 Gold Shield. A wholesome Taler with a minimum of noticeable marks and gentle gray toning throughout." This type was struck 1725-28 but is nevertheless listed as very scarce. Christoph Franz von Hutten ruled his diocese 1724-29. Unlike his predecessor or his successor, he was not simultaneously bishop of Bamberg. The territory was annexed to Bavaria in 1803.
