Wurzburg 1728 thaler Dav-2886
This specimen was lot 1403 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 550 CHF (about US$798 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Würzburg, Bistum, Christoph Franz von Hutten, 1724-1729. Taler 1728, Würzburg oder Nürnberg. Ohne Münzmeistersignatur unter dem Brustbild. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Kleiner Randfehler. Bei dem Taler gleichen Typs von 1725 findet sich die Münzmeistersignatur "N" unter dem Brustbild (Helmschrott 597). Diese könnte dem Nürnberger Münzmeister Paul Gottlieb Nürnberger zugewiesen werden, der 1716-1746 in Nürnberg tätig war. (Germany, bishopric of Würzburg, Christopher Francis of Hutten, 1724-29, thaler of 1728, Wurzburg or Nuremberg mints, without engraver's initials under the bust. Very Fine-Extremely Fine, Minor edge flaw.)"
This type was struck 1725-28 but is nevertheless listed as very scarce. Christoph Franz von Hutten ruled his diocese 1724-29. Unlike his predecessor or his successor, he was not simultaneously bishop of Bamberg. The territory was annexed to Bavaria in 1803.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specifications: silver, this specimen 28.80 g.
