Utrecht 1592 rijksdaalder Dav-8861

Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74163

This specimen was lot 74163 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description^[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Utrecht. Rijksdaa[ld]er, 1592. NGC AU-58. The sole finest graded example of this type yet certified by NGC, this wonderful piece yields a nice strike and wholesome details along with a bright and shimmering luster throughout. A single planchet split is noted for completeness, but the surfaces otherwise are quite attractive. An impressive piece that is certain to garner much attention when it is offered at auction." This type was struck 1591-94 and 1598-1602 (the issues of 1601-03 are catalogued as Dav-4862). A double rijksdaalder also exists. Simultaneous with the Lion daalder (48 stuivers) was the "prince" daalder (40 stuivers, shown here), the silver ducat (also 48 stuivers), the three gulden (60 stuivers) and the ducaton (silver rider). The catalog does not explain why so many different large silver coins were felt to be necessary.
