SB223-74152r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74152 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Holland. Rijksdaalder, 1592. William the Silent. NGC AU-53. A pleasing example, this wonderful piece yields a bold strike and steely gray surfaces throughout alone with a crisp and refined strike. Certain to capture much attention, we expect many competitive bids for this type." This type was struck 1591-92 and 1600-02 (the issues of 1601-02 are catalogued as Dav-4822). Simultaneous with the Lion daalder (48 stuivers) was the "prince" daalder (40 stuivers, shown here), the silver ducat (also 48 stuivers), the three gulden (60 stuivers) and the ducaton (silver rider). The catalog does not explain why so many different large silver coins were felt to be necessary.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 29.03 g, 0.885 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-8841, KM 10.
