Sincona sale 94, lot 2132

This specimen was lot 2132 in Sincona sale 94 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 1,200 CHF (about US$1,663 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NIEDERLANDE Holland, Provinz, Reichstaler (Leicester rijksdalder) 1595. Selten. Sehr schön. (Netherlands, province of Holland, Leicester rijksdaalder of 1595. Rare, Very Fine.)"

This type was struck 1595 only. It varies from the previous Dav-8843 by having the reverse shield divided into seven parts instead of six. The Earl of Leicester was sent by queen Elizabeth of England to assist the Dutch in their struggle for independence from the Spanish. Wikipedia comments, "A champion also of the international Protestant cause, he led the English campaign in support of the Dutch Revolt (1585–1587). His acceptance of the post of governor-general of the United Provinces infuriated Queen Elizabeth. The expedition was a military and political failure, and it ruined Leicester financially." At this point, Holland had left the Spanish Netherlands but king Philip was still trying to reconquer it.

Recorded mintage: unknown.
