Jean Elsen list 265, lot 870
Kampen 1596 rijksdaalder rev JElsen 265-870.jpg

This specimen was lot 870 in Jean Elsen list 265 (Brussels, July-September 2013) where it was offered for €700 (about US$924 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, KAMPEN, Stad, AR arendrijksdaalder, 1596, Met titel van Rudolf II. Droit: Stadspoort met drie torens. Jaartal tussen de torens. Revers : Gekroonde rijksarend. Zeer Fraai. (city of Kampen, silver rijksdaler of 1596, in the name of Rudolf II. Obverse: city gate with three towers, date between; reverse: crowned imperial eagle. Very fine.)"

The towns of Deventer, Kampen and Zwolle are in central Overijssel and banded together in the mid-sixteenth century to issue coinage. This type was struck by the town of Kampen 1596-98. Undated and klippe examples exist. A number of towns issued coins in the Netherlands besides the provincial issues and the Generality consistently found them below standard as to weight and purity. Decades of complaints finally resulted in the closure of all the municipal mints by the end of the seventeenth century.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 29.03 g, 0.885 fine silver, this specimen 25.95 g.
