Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74156
SB223-74156r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74156 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Kampen. Rijksdaadler, 1598. NGC VF-30. A shimmering and wholesome example, this nice piece demonstrates strong details and just a touch of handling on the surfaces. An appealing and lovely example for any specialist in late Medieval Talers." The towns of Deventer, Kampen and Zwolle are in central Overijssel and banded together in the mid-sixteenth century to issue coinage. This type was struck by the town of Kampen 1596-98. Undated and klippe examples exist. A number of towns issued coins in the Netherlands besides the provincial issues and the Generality consistently found them below standard as to weight and purity. Decades of complaints finally resulted in the closure of all the municipal mints by the end of the seventeenth century.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 29.03 g, 0.885 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-8881; Delm-700.
