Kampen (1600) noble Fr-151a
This specimen was lot 2527 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €1,500 (about US$1,899 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, KAMPEN, Stad, AV gouden nobel op Vlaamse muntvoet, z.j. (ca. 1600). Vz/ Gekroonde vorst in een schip met zwaard en schild met de Overijsselse leeuw met het stadswapen in de linkerklauw. Op de achtersteven een banier met hetzelfde wapen. Kz/ Gebloemd kruis in een achtpas met lelies op de uiteinden en in het hart een roosje. In de hoeken, vier gekroonde leeuwen. Zeer zeldzaam. Lichte vouwsporen, met randschade. goede Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, city of Kampen, undated gold noble of the Flemish standard, circa 1600. Obverse: crowned king stands in a ship with sword and shield of Overijssel, the same arms on the flag at the stern; reverse: floriate cross in an octolobe with a rose at the center, cantonned with four crowned lions. Very rare, lightly creased, edge damage, good very fine.)"
The English standard was 7.61 g, the Flemish standard used here was 6.72 g. The Estates General spent much of the seventeenth century attempting to suppress the municipal mints, citing their inveterate tendency to issue coins of light weight and bad alloy.
