Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 2097

This specimen was lot 2097 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €340 (about US$442 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, KAMPEN, Stad, AV dukaat, 1598. Met titel van Rudolf II (1576-1612). Vz/ Staande keizer r. met scepter en rijksappel. Kz/ Tekst in versierd vierkant. Gekreukeld. Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, city of Kampen, gold ducat of 1598, struck in the name of Rudolf II. Obverse: the emperor stands, with scepter and orb; reverse: text in square tablet. Wrinkled, Very Fine.)"

A number of towns issued coins in the Netherlands besides the provinces and the Generality consistently found them below standard as to weight and purity. Decades of complaints finally resulted in the closure of all the municipal mints by the end of the seventeenth century. This type was struck 1586-1603 and 1646-60 and is fairly scarce. The coin was struck in the name of emperor Rudolf II, who died in 1612.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.50 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3,44 g.
