Groningen 1583 1/2 Flemish noble
This specimen was lot 799 in Jean Elsen sale 140 (Brussels, March 2019), where it sold for €9,500 (about US$12,653 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, GRONINGEN, Stad, AV halve Gentse nobel, 1583. Met klop stadswapen (6-7 maart 1590). Vz/ Gekroonde krijger in een schip met zwaard en leeuwenschild. Op de achtersteven, leeuwtje dat een banier met een leeuw vasthoudt. In het veld, N-T. Omschrift eindigend op GANDA-·FLAND·. Kz/ Gebloemd kruis in een achtpas met lelies op de uiteinden en in het hart een roosje. In de hoeken, vier gekroonde leeuwen. Uniek en ongepubliceerd. Zeer Fraai à Prachtig. (city of Groningen, gold half noble of 1583, with counterstamp of 1590. Obverse: crowned lord in ship with sword and shield, in the field N-T. Reverse: floriate cross, rose in center, in octolobe with lilies and crowned lions in the field. Unique and unpublished, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"
Groningen is the province in the far north of the Netherlands, facing the North Sea. This type is not listed in Friedberg, who mentions only the full Flemish noble (Fr-85a).
