This specimen was lot 32016 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "Gorinchem. City gold Imitative Rose Noble ND (1583-1591) XF45 NGC. Struck in imitation of the gold Ryal (Rose Noble) issues produced under the reign of Edward IV, this type still bearing his name in the obverse legend. The surfaces are a brassy hue of gold, with the majority of the detail well-outlined and dressed in earthen tones that create an accentuating effect, the strike placed on a broad, attractive flan. From the Allen Moretti Swiss Collection." Gorinchem was originally an independent burg but was incorporated into the county of Holland in 1417. It was on the front line of the contest between the Catholics and Calvinists during the sixteenth century. This issue and an accompanying Flemish noble are the only gold issues from this town. The rose noble was an imitation of a fifteenth century English coin.
