JE162-2023r.jpg

This specimen was lot 2023 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €200 (about US$277 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, KAMPEN, Stad, AR arendrijksdaalder, z.j. Met titel van Rudolf II (1592-1612). Vz/ Stadspoort met drie torens. Kz/ Gekroonde rijksarend. Licht gereinigd. (Netherlands, city of Kampen, undated eagle daalder struck in the name of Rudolf II, circa 1592-1612. Obverse: city gate with towers; reverse: crowned imperial eagle. Lightly cleaned, Fine - Very Fine.)"

The towns of Deventer, Kampen and Zwolle are in central Overijssel and banded together in the mid-sixteenth century to issue coinage. This type was struck by the town of Kampen 1596-98. Undated and klippe examples exist. A number of towns issued coins in the Netherlands besides the provincial issues and the Generality consistently found them below standard as to weight and purity. Decades of complaints finally resulted in the closure of all the municipal mints by the end of the seventeenth century.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 29.03 g, 0.885 fine silver, this specimen 27,97 g.

Catalog reference: Verk. 160, 1; Delm-700; Dav-8881.
