Sincona sale 76, lot 1304

This specimen was lot 1304 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,214 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"THE NETHERLANDS | Kampen, Stadt. 1/2 Löwentaler o. J. (um 1597). Nach dem niederländischen Fuss. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich-FDC. NGC MS61. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. (Netherlands, city of Kampen, undated half lion daalder, struck to the Dutch standard. Very rare, especially in this condition, Extremely fine-uncirculated, Extraordinary condition.)"

The SCWC lists a half rijksdaalder (KM 3) for 1601 and half leeuwendaalders for 1646-57 (KM 43) from this town. A number of towns issued coins in the Netherlands besides the provincial issues and the Generality consistently found them below standard as to weight and purity. Decades of complaints finally resulted in the closure of all the municipal mints by the end of the seventeenth century. Lion daalders were poorly made even by the low standards of the sixteenth century Dutch and this example is far above average.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.48 g, 0.750 fine silver, this specimen 13.41 g.

Catalog reference: Delmonte 887 (R3), see KM 43.
