Holland 1591 rijksdaalder Dav-8841
The first specimen was lot 245 in Schulman sale 344 (Amsterdam, March 2014), where it sold for €600 (about US$982 including buyer;s fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"gehelmde rijksdaalder of prinsen rijksdaalder. 1591. Type II. Geharnast borstbeeld van Willem de Zwijger met zwaard naar rechts x VIGILATE x DEO x CONF – IDENTE ‒ S x jaartal. Kz. provinciewapen onder grote toernooihelm x MONETA x NO x ARG x COMIT x HOL x ❀ x (zonder titel van Zeeland). RR. Miniem slagbarstje en kras op de helm. Prachtig. (prince's daalder of 1591, type II. Half length armored bust of William the Silent with sword to right, date above. Reverse: helmeted arms of the province, without the title of Zeeland. Rare, extremely fine.)
The second specimen was lot 8016 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description[2] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Holland. Rijksdaalder, 1591. NGC MS-61. A wholesome and almost fully original example of the type. Mostly slate gray in color with a few areas of patina, this Mint State piece still has a good amount of brilliance." This type is listed in Davenport for 1591-92 and 1600 for Holland. A closely related type is listed for 1601-02 (Dav-4822). Simultaneous with the "prince" daalder (40 stuivers) was the Lion daalder (48 stuivers), the silver ducat (also 48 stuivers), the three gulden (60 stuivers) and the ducaton (silver rider). The catalog does not expalin why so many different large silver coins were felt to be necessary.
