Transylvania 1627-NB thaler Dav-4720

Sincona sale 4, lot 5927

This specimen was lot 5927 in Sincona sale 4 (Zürich, October 2011), where it sold for 3,800 CHF (about US$5,054 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"UNGARN Gabriel Bethlen, 1613-1629 Taler 1627, Nagybanya. Geharnischtes Brustbild nach rechts. Rv. Wappen auf gekrönter, verzierter Wappenkartusche. Gutes sehr schön. (Hungary, Gabriel Bethlen, 1613-29, thaler of 1627, Nagybánya mint. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: crowned arms. Good very fine.)"

Like most coins of Transylvania, this type (struck 1627-28) is rare and expensive. As Transylvania was never part of the Holy Roman Empire and was not at this point controlled by the Hapsburgs, we have not included it in the "silver thalers of Germany." Gabriel Bethlen, the prince, was a Calvinist who allied himself with the Ottomans against the Catholic Hapsburgs. Altho this thaler is very similar to Dav-4721, the most obvious difference is the size of the crown on the reverse.
