Transylvania 1627-MC 2 thaler Dav-4718
This specimen was lot 2094 in Sincona sale 66 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 32,000 CHF (about US$42,128 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SIEGENBURGEN, Fürstentum, Gabriel Bethlen, 1613-1629. 2 Taler 1627 MC, Kaschau. Geharnischtes Brustbild mit geschultertem Zepter nach rechts. Rv. Gekröntes, vierfeldiges Wappen mit dem Familienwappen Bethlen als Mittelschild. Von grösster Seltenheit. Gutes sehr schön. Kleiner Schrötlingsfehler und Reste alter Glättung im Feld und auf dem Rand. Feine Patina. (principality of Transylvania, Gabriel Bethlen, 1613-1629, double thaler of 1627, Kaschau mint. Obverse: armored bust with scepter to right; reverse: quartered arms with the escutcheon of Bethlen in the center. Of the highest rarity, Good very fine, Minor flan flaw and signs of old tooling in the fields and on the edge, Nicely toned.)"
Gabriel Bethlen, the prince, was a Calvinist who allied himself with the Ottomans against the Catholic Hapsburgs. This double thaler was also struck as a klippe (Dav-4718B) and is slightly more available thus.
