Stack's Bowers October 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 75769

This specimen was lot 75769 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $125. The catalog description[1] noted, "TRANSYLVANIA. Groschen, 1627. Gabriel Bethlen. PCGS EF-40. Well-centered and nicely preserved with a grainy charcoal finish." This type was struck 1626-29 with mintmarks NB (shown here), MC and CC. Gabriel Bethlen (r. 1618-29), a Calvinist, used Ottoman support to resist Hapsburg encroachment. He was elected king of Hungary in 1620 but never managed to claim that country.
