Transylvania 1627-MC thaler Dav-4719
This specimen was lot 2095 in Sincona sale 66 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 5,250 CHF (about US$6,912 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SIEGENBURGEN, Fürstentum, Gabriel Bethlen, 1613-1629. Taler 1627, Kaschau. Sehr selten. Gutes sehr schön. Kleine Kratzer. (principality of Transylvania, Gabriel Bethlen, 1613-1629, thaler of 1627, Kaschau mint. Very rare, Good very fine, Small scratches.)"
Gabriel Bethlen, the prince, was a Calvinist who allied himself with the Ottomans against the Catholic Hapsburgs. This example realized four times the catalog value. Double thalers also exist (Dav-4718) from this mint.
