Steve Album sale 51, lot 1187

This specimen was lot 1187 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $180. The catalog description[1] noted, "TRANSYLVANIA: Gabriel Bethlen, 1613-1629, AR groschen (garas), 1628-NB, PCGS graded AU55." This type was struck 1626-29 with various mintmarks, This seems to be the most common date. Gabriel Bethlen (r. 1618-29), a Calvinist, used Ottoman support to resist Hapsburg encroachment. He was elected king of Hungary in 1620 but never managed to claim that country.
