Ponterio sale 168, lot 40812

This specimen was lot 40812 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $11,162. The catalog description[1] noted, "TRANSYLVANIA. Taler, 1621-KB. NGC MS-63. Gabriel Bethlem (1613-29). Nicely toned with underlying luster, sharply struck and very attractive. From the Demarete Collection." The princes of Transylvania were sandwiched between the Ottoman Empire to the south and the Hapsburg dominions to the west and attempted to maintain independence from both. The Hapsburgs reconquered Hungary from the Turks in the 1680's and ended Transylvanian autonomy. Most Transylvanian thalers, including this one, are scarce to rare even in circulated condition. This specimen is several grades nicer than the plate coin in the SCWC.
