Transylvania 1621-NB thaler Dav-4713
This specimen was lot 4657 in Goldberg sale 80 (Los Angeles, June 2014), where it sold for $1,645. The catalog description[1] noted, "Transylvania. Taler, 1621-NB. Gabriel Bethlen, 1613-1629. Large bust right. Reverse: Crowned arms. NGC graded Extremely Fine, Details (Obverse Repaired)." The princes of Transylvania were sandwiched between the Ottoman Empire to the south and the Hapsburg dominions to the west and attempted to maintain independence from both. The Hapsburgs reconquered Hungary from the Turks in the 1680's and ended Transylvanian autonomy. Most Transylvanian thalers, including this one, are scarce to rare even in circulated condition.
