This specimen is the first coin issued by Tanzania as part of the F.A.O. series. Tanzania is a union of the former British colonies of Tanganyika and Zanzibar and has been independent since 1964. Julius Nyerere (1922-99), shown on the obverse, was president of Tanzania 1964-85. In 1982, US$1 = 9.4 shillings.

Specification: copper-nickel, 31.5 mm diameter.
