This specimen is the first coin issued by Zambia as part of the F.A.O. series and the first coin of that denomination. Zambia fell under British domination in the 1880's (then called "Northern Rhodesia") and remained a colony until independence in 1964. Altho blessed with ample mineral resources, especially copper, the country remains mired in poverty. Kenneth Kaunda, shown on the obverse, was president of Zambia 1964-91.
