This specimen is the first coin issued by Uganda as part of the F.A.O. series and the first coin of that denomination. Uganda fell under British domination in the 1890's and remained a colony until independence in 1962. The unhappy land suffered a series of dictators, including Milton Obote and the infamous Idi Amin and the depredations of the Lord's Army, a fanatical group of guerillas which enslaved thousands of children.
Recorded mintage: 100,000 plus 5,000 proofs.
Specification: copper-nickel, 37.8 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 7.
