This specimen is the first coin issued by Burundi as part of the F.A.O. series and the first coin of that denomination. Burundi fell under German domination in the 1890's then passed to Belgium in 1919. She obtained indepemdence in 1961. Altho blessed with unusually fertile soil for Africa, the country remains mired in poverty. Her neighbor to the north, Rwanda, was the site of a horrific genocide in the 1990's. The first specimen was lot 74776 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "BURUNDI. 10 Francs, 1971. London or Llantrisant Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-67. From the Kings Norton Mint Collection."

Recorded mintage: 2,000,000.

Specification: copper-nickel, 28 mm diameter.
