Tanzania is a union of the former British colonies of Tanganyika and Zanzibar and has been independent since 1964. Julius Nyerere (1922-99), shown on the obverse, was president of Tanzania 1964-85. The nickel-brass twenty senti shown was issued 1966, 1970, 1973-84.
